Over the course of John’s leadership as Chief Executive Officer\, OMERS Ventures had invested over $500 million of capital in over 40 disruptive technology companies across North America\, including growth investments in Shopify\, Wattpad\, Wave\, Hootsuite\, Rover\, Desire 2 Learn\, Hopper\, DuckDuckGo\, TouchBistro and League. \nDuring his tenure at OMERS\, John also formed OMERS Platform Investments as its Executive Managing Director. He led investments in Purpose Financial\, PointNorth Capital\, District Ventures\, OneEleven and ArcTern Ventures. Co-founded with Jim Balsillie\, the Council of Canadian Innovators is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping highgrowth Canadian technology firms scale up globally. The Council is made up of CEOs from Canada’s most promising technology companies. The Council’s position is to promote\, share\, and collaborate with public policy leaders on key policy levers to optimize the growth of Canada’s innovation-based sector. John also currently sits on the boards of a number of leading innovative organizations including AI Partnerships Corp.\, engineering.com\, Ether Capital\, OneEleven\, ArcTern Ventures\, and Canopy Rivers. This is awarded to a graduate who has demonstrated outstanding career potential and achieved success and recognition in their field. \nArlene Dickinson\nGeneral Partner\, District Ventures Capital \nArlene Dickinson is a serial entrepreneur and General Partner of District Ventures Capital\, a venture capital fund focused on helping market\, fund and grow entrepreneurs and their companies\, in the food and health space. \nShe is a three-time best-selling author\, podcaster and accomplished public speaker. Dickinson is widely recognized for her role as a Dragon/Venture Capitalist for over 12 seasons on the multi-award-winning CBC television series\, Dragons Den. \nMs. Dickinson’s leadership has been recognized many times\, including Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Hall of Fame\, the Pinnacle Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence\, as well as PROFIT and Chatelaine’s Top 100 Women Business Owners. She is a Marketing Hall of Legends inductee and a proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Award. It will also include a broader discussion about the future of technology development in agriculture by thought leader and SPARK Speaker Series keynote\, Robert Saik. ERA will also announce the winners of its Food\, Farming\, and Forestry Challenge. \nIf you are a technology developer\, industry member\, investor\, or government employee interested in Alberta’s agriculture\, agri-food\, and forestry sectors; have a project in progress or are pursuing a similar technology innovation; this event is for you. \nLESSONS LEARNED WORKSHOP\nModerated by Mark Summers\, ERA’s Executive Director of Technology and Innovation\, this Lessons Learned Workshop will feature presentations from innovators that have completed ERA-funded projects. It brings cleantech researchers and innovators together with representatives from the business community\, government\, and the innovation system to help inspire and accelerate Alberta’s transformation to a low carbon economy. \nAbout Robert Saik: \n“We are moving to Agriculture 5.0\, which is a convergence of agricultural science with exponential advances in technology.”  \nRobert Saik has more than 40 years of experience as an outspoken champion of agriculture\, is a distinguished agrologist\, professional agriculture consultant\, serial entrepreneur and has been hailed as an agriculture futurist with unparalleled insight into where the industry is headed. Beginning his career on a mixed farm in Alberta\, he has gone on to found and invest in over 15 companies and is currently the CEO of AGVisorPro\, a connectivity and resource platform for agriculture. \nAn author\, keynote\, entrepreneur\, and thought leader\, Saik has been tapped by the likes of Bill Gates\, the Minister of Agriculture for Nigeria\, and most recently the FAO_UN Committee for World Food Security.
